This year's Refugee Week theme, Courage, invited us to reflect on the many forms courage can take. At Future Leaders, we wanted to explore this not through definitions, but through the lived experiences of our alumni. What emerged was Threads of Courage: Mapping Our Journeys - an exhibition that celebrated resilience, identity, belonging, and the extraordinary strength it takes to begin again.
More than an exhibition, it was a space where our alumni could share their stories in their own voices and invite others to walk alongside them, one thread at a time.

At the heart of the exhibition was a large world map. Every participating alumni member traced their personal journey using a unique coloured thread. Together, these individual threads stretched across continents, creating a striking visual representation of the many paths that have brought our community together.
From afar, the map was a vibrant artwork. Up close, every thread told a different story—a story of leaving home, crossing borders, overcoming uncertainty, and finding new beginnings. Each journey was unique, but they were all connected by one thing: courage. The courage to leave everything behind, to face the unknown, and to build a new life.
Beside the map were framed personal stories written by our alumni. At the bottom of each frame was a small piece of the same coloured thread used on the map. Visitors were invited to read someone's story, find the matching thread, and trace their journey across the world. This simple connection encouraged people to see that every line on the map represented a real person, with memories, dreams, challenges, and hopes.

We also invited our alumni to share a meaningful object they had brought with them from home. Each object was displayed alongside a personal reflection explaining why it mattered. Some represented family, others culture, faith, childhood, or hope. Though small in size, these objects carried immense emotional significance, reminding us that the things people choose to carry often hold the stories of the lives they have left behind.
Another corner of the exhibition showcased artwork created by our alumni, alongside powerful quotes taken from their written reflections. Through art, words, and creativity, they shared experiences that cannot always be expressed through conversation alone, offering visitors another way to connect with their journeys.

Visitors were also invited to pause at our listening station, where two tablets offered a more immersive experience. One featured the Future Leaders film, introducing our programme and community. The other presented Letters From Home—a collection of letters written by
our alumni to loved ones in their home countries. Through headphones, visitors could listen to these deeply personal messages of love, longing, gratitude, and hope, creating moments of quiet reflection and connection.

We were delighted to officially launch Threads of Courage: Mapping Our Journeys on 16 June at 5.30pm, surrounded by alumni, friends, partners, supporters, and members of our wider community. It was incredibly moving to watch visitors spend time with each story, trace the coloured threads across the map, listen to the letters, and engage in thoughtful conversations inspired by what they had experienced. The evening was a celebration not only of the exhibition itself, but of the trust, creativity, and generosity of everyone who made it possible.
This exhibition could only exist because of the courage of our alumni. Sharing personal stories is an act of vulnerability. It means opening the door to memories that are often painful, while also celebrating resilience, growth, and hope. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed a story, an object, a piece of artwork, or a letter. Their generosity transformed the exhibition into a powerful reminder that every journey deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.
Threads of Courage: Mapping Our Journeys reminded us that behind every migration journey is a person—not a statistic, but someone with a history, a family, dreams, talents, and an incredible capacity to persevere.
We hope everyone who visited left with a deeper understanding of what courage can look like. Sometimes courage is crossing a border. Sometimes it is learning a new language, rebuilding a life, or finding the strength to tell your story. And sometimes, courage is simply choosing to keep moving forward.
To everyone who visited, supported, and contributed to the exhibition, thank you for helping us celebrate the courage, creativity, and resilience of the Future Leaders community.
Also a special thanks to all alumni members who contributed to the exhibition. We couldn’t make it without your generosity and courage!
